Pickin’ with the Chickens

Friday, one of my friends asked if I wanted to come and pick crab apples. Her tree is loaded with them. We had a great apple tree at our old house, and I thought I would be missing the apple sauce, juice and pie that it provided us with, but we are set once again. How wonderful. As I was filling my bag with apples, all her hens ran over to see if I had brought treats. Alas, I had not, but they stayed with me and pecked and scratched for quite a while. I love the company of hens – the little noises they make, their peaceful manner and gentle curiosity. I used to love helping my uncle care for his chickens on summer vacations, so ‘hanging with the hens” is a big treat for me. Happy days.
